April 19, 2024 | Men's Golf
Tar Heels Peter Fountain and Austin Greaser combined to shoot 7 under par Friday in the opening round of the 2024 ACC Men's Golf Championship at the Charlotte Country Club.
Carolina is second in the 12-team field at 9-under 275, four strokes behind Wake Forest. Georgia Tech is third at 6 under and Florida State is fourth (-4).
The top four teams after Sunday's third round of stroke play advance to match play on Monday.
Fountain, a senior from Raleigh, led the field with seven birdies en route to a 4-under-par 67, one shot off the lead (Georgia Tech's Bartley Forrester and Wake Forest's Michael Brennan both shot 66).
Fountain, the 2021 ACC champion and the runner-up in a playoff in 2022, was the co-leader today in scoring on both par 4s and par 5s. His 67 was his fourth consecutive round in the 60s this season and his sixth in 10 career rounds in the ACC Championship.
Greaser was even after three holes and played the final 15 with three birdies and a dozen pars to shoot 3-under 68. It was his best round in the ACC Championship since a 68 in the first round in 2022.
David Ford and Maxwell Ford both shot 1-under 70s and Dylan Menante opened with a 75.
Round two is Saturday.
