Fords Shoot Combined 7 Under In Williams Cup 1st Round

North Carolina seniors David Ford and Maxwell Ford combined to shoot 7 under par Sunday in the first round of the Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
David Ford, the tournament's defending champion, is tied for the lead with Auburn's Josiah Gilbert at 4-under 68.
Maxwell Ford is third, one shot ahead of four players, including 2024 U.S. Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester of Arizona State.
The Sun Devils lead after round one following their 3-under 285, one stroke ahead of the Tar Heels, who have won the team title the previous three years.
NC State and reigning NCAA champion Auburn are tied for third at even-par 288. Notre Dame is fifth (+1), Oregon State is sixth (+2), North Florida is seventh (+4) and Louisville is eighth in the 13-team field at 8 over.
David Ford was 1 over par through five holes, closed with two birdies on the front nine then shot 3-under 33 on the back nine. He made birdies at 10, 15 and 18 to shoot 68. He has finished second, tied for second and first in three previous Williams Cups.
David Ford played in a group that included the top three players in the current PGA TOUR University standings. Auburn's Brendan Valdes is ranked No. 1, Ford is second and Ballester is third.
Maxwell Ford made four birdies and only one bogey en route to his 3-under 69.
Carolina's Keaton Vo shot 2-over 74, Hampton Roberts shot 75 and Ethan Paschal had a 76.
Round two is Monday with the third and final round scheduled for Tuesday.
Twelve players in the field of 75 shot below par with another five finishing at even-par 72. The average score was 74.64.
