Epic #1 vs. #2 Matchup Goes To UNC, 4-3
April 3, 2022 | Women's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. - Elizabeth Scotty won the clinching point to lift No. 1 North Carolina to a thrilling 4-3 victory over second-ranked NC State on Sunday in a grueling ACC women's tennis match that took three hours and forty five minutes to complete at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Scotty's clinching point gave Carolina a 4-3 victory and improved to 21-0 this spring and 10-0 against the league. The Tar Heels are the only remaining unbeaten team in Division I women's tennis. Meanwhile, NC State entered the weekend with its best ranking in program history, yet lost 4-3 to both Duke and UNC and are now 19-3 overall and 7-2 in the ACC.
NC State started well by winning the doubles point in dominating fashion to take the early 1-0 lead. However, that would prove to be the last lead the hosts would enjoy on a sun-splashed afternoon in the state capital.
No. 34 Fiona Crawley continued her dominating form with a straight-set win on court four and No. 33 Carson Tanguilig made it 2-1 Tar Heels with a win on court five.
The Pack got a point on court six, but No. 12 Cameron Morra answered back with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, win over No. 14 Jaeda Daniel on court one.
NC State earned a win on court three to make it 3-3, setting up a dramatic finish between No. 16 Scotty and No. 31 Abigail Rencheli. Scotty clawed back from dropping the opening set to grab a tie breaking win in the second set and cruised to a 6-1 third-set victory and a 44th straight win in ACC play for the Heels.
The Tar Heels now switch focus to their final two matches of the season at Chapel Hill Tennis Club. Clemson comes to town Friday for a 3 p.m. match, while Georgia Tech arrives on Sunday for Senior Day and a 1 p.m. start.
