CARRBORO, N.C. - Ranked No. 1 and having already won a third-straight indoor national title this spring, the North Carolina women's tennis team heads into spring break with a 15-0 record and an unblemished 4-0 mark in ACC play after dispatching of No. 12 Virginia, 4-1, on Sunday from the Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
The Tar Heels improve to 15-0 on the season after taking down the Cavaliers for the second time in 2022. Virginia suffers its second loss this weekend after losing 4-3 to Duke on Friday and falls to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.
Carolina extends its program record winning streak to 38 straight victories in regular season league play, and in the process continues its unbeaten mark at home that now stands at 56 wins in a row.
The Tar Heels earned a hard-fought doubles point to start the afternoon. After losing 6-3 on court one. Junior Elizabeth Scotty and senior Alle Sanford kept the Tar Heels alive, winning court two 6-4. The fate of the doubles point fell to court three, where freshmen Carson Tanguilig and sophomore Fiona Crawley won 7-6 after winning the tiebreak, 7-4.
Junior Anika Yarlagadda led the Tar Heels in singles with a quick win in straight sets on court six to further Carolina's lead at 2-0.
No. 28 Emma Navarro, the 2021 NCAA singles champion, responded on court one with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over No. 7 Cameron Morra, to cut the Tar Heel lead in half at 2-1.
However, the Tar Heels did not look back. No. 35 Fiona Crawley won on court four and No. 10 Reilly Tran clinched the win for Carolina on court three. Tran's victory prevented No. 13, Elizabeth Scotty from finishing a tough three-set match against No. 15 Natasha Subhash on court 2. Scotty's match was called off as she was winning 5-1 in the third set.
The Tar Heels will return to action to face Syracuse on March 18th at 3 p.m. That weekend is poised to be another historic few days for the program. Head coach Brian Kalbas sits at 698 career victories and could reach the 700 win plateau with a victory over the Orange and Boston College two days later on March 20.
