CARRBORO, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina women's tennis returned from a 12-day layoff and showed no signs of rust setting in after posting a convincing 7-0 victory over Syracuse on Friday afternoon from Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
North Carolina (16-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) improves to 12-0 all-time against the Orange, who falls to 7-5 overall and 1-4 against the league.
Carolina grabbed the opening doubles point from the visiting Orange. Paired up for the first time this spring, 80th ranked Fiona Crawley and Reilly Tran were first to finish on court three, 6-1, while the point was secured after court two's win courtesy of Alle Sanford and Elizabeth Scotty.
UNC won all six first sets to continue its momentum gained in doubles. The next three points all came within a five-minute span to clinch the win for the Tar Heels after No. 28 Fiona Crawley, No. 10 Reilly Tran and Anika Yarlagadda picked up straight-set wins.
No. 24 Carson Tanguilig finished soon after with another straight-set win on court five to make it 5-0 Tar Heels.
No. 15 Elizabeth Scotty earned a win spanning three sets on court two and No. 9 Cameron Morra made it a clean sweep with a victory on court one.
The win also marked the 699th in the magnificent career of Tar Heel head coach Brian Kalbas. He will go for No. 700 against Boston College on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Chapel Hill Tennis Club. A win would move Kalbas into an elite group of just four Division I coaches to win 700 dual matches.
