CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina welcomed Tennessee to town this weekend for the Tar Heel Invite. The Tar Heels and Volunteers competed on Friday and Sunday from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
On Friday, Carolina picked up three singles wins over nationally-ranked players. The best match of the day pitted UNC's fifth-ranked Cameron Morra against No. 14 Rebeka Mertena.
The nearly three-hour battle went in favor of Morra by a third-set tiebreaker score of 8-6.
Mertena won the opening set, 5-7, before Morra cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set. The third set saw both players enjoy multiple leads, but at 6-5 with Morra holding a slim advantage in the late stages, Mertena sent the set to the tiebreaker that was ultimately captured by Morra.
Elizabeth Scotty and No. 19 Fiona Crawley earned straight-set victories over No. 41 Tenika McGiffin and No. 56 Elza Tomase, respectively.
Sunday's action started with the No. 1 ranked doubles team of Crawley and Scotty picking up a 6-1 win over McGiffin and Daria Kuczer.
Scotty later finished off her impressive weekend with a 6-2, 6-2, win over #14 Martena.
