#1 Tar Heels Outlast #2 Seminoles, 4-3
February 21, 2020 | Women's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The top ranked North Carolina women's tennis team held on against the No. 2 Florida State Seminoles to win a down-to-the-wire matchup, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. The Tar Heels are now 13-0 following their first conference matchup, while the Seminoles drop to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
UNC also extends its winning streak to six straight matches over No. 2 ranked teams, a run that dates back to the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championship finals win over UCLA. Additionally, the Heels have beaten the Seminoles 12 straight times in all competitions.
Carolina opened the match with yet another doubles point. All three matchups finished relatively around the same time with Makenna Jones and Alle Sanford first winning court two, 6-1. Though Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham fell to Petra Hule and Victoria Allen on court 1, Cameron Morra and Elizabeth Scotty bested their Seminoles opponents, 6-2.
With the Heels up 1-0 heading into singles, Florida State made up some ground on UNC. Though Graham kept Carolina in the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over FSU's Emmanuelle Salas, the Seminoles won the first, third and fourth singles points. Now trailing 3-2, the Tar Heels needed Morra and Scotty to dig deep into their third sets.
Scotty forced a third set after besting No. 83 Nandini Das 6-2 in the second and appeared to be separating herself from Das. However, Morra fell behind early in her third set before fighting back to win four-straight games. The sophomore soon found herself in a close tiebreaker with Florida State's Petra Hule, but Morra held on to win the tiebreaker 9-7. Shortly after, Scotty clinched the match for Carolina with a 6-1 third set to give the Heels a remarkable come-from-behind victory.
Morra trailed 2-3 and 4-5 in the tiebreaker and was down a break in the third set as well. Meanwhile, Scotty has yet to lose either a single or doubles match in her brief introduction to college dual match tennis. The Annapolis, Md., native joined the program in January and has notched a 7-0 singles record and a 10-0 mark in doubles.
No. 6 Daavettila was pulled after doubles due to illness. Graham's singles win was her 127th with the Tar Heels, tying her for third in program history with All-America standouts Jessie Aney and Caroline Price.
On Sunday, UNC will face No. 27 Miami on ACC Network Extra in Coral Gables at 11 a.m.
