#1 UNC Faces #2 FSU, #27 Miami On The Road This Weekend
February 20, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The opening weekend of ACC women's tennis for the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels will prove to be a difficult one with a pair of matchups in the state of Florida. First up is a battle of the top two ranked programs in the nation when Carolina visits No. 2 Florida State on Friday in Tallahassee at noon. On Sunday, UNC will face No. 27 Miami on ACC Network Extra in Coral Gables at 11 a.m.
Carolina remained No. 1 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I women's tennis poll for the second week in a row. The Tar Heels improved to 12-0 on the season with two shutout victories last Saturday at home against East Carolina and Charlotte.Â
A new week brought with it a new program first when the updated singles rankings listed seven UNC players among the top 125 in the country, topping the six ranked players that have occurred numerous times in recent seasons. Carolina is the only program to have more than one player included in the top 10 of the singles rankings. UNC's trio features No. 4 Cameron Morra, No. 5 Alexa Graham and No. 6 Sara Daavettila.
Alle Sanford checks in at No. 39, while senior Makenna Jones made a gigantic leap to No. 43 in the nation after sitting at 101 a couple weeks ago. Freshmen Kacie Harvey sits at No. 81 and Elizabeth Scotty enters the rankings for the very first time at No. 111.Â
In doubles, Daavettila and Graham rose two places to No. 4, while Jones and Morra, who haven't competed together since November, are No. 5. Meanwhile, Jones and Sanford continue to climb up the rankings at No. 19.
Florida State (10-1) rides a four-match winning streak into Friday morning. The Seminoles opened their league slate on Monday with 4-3 win at Miami. The only loss pinned to FSU thus far in 2020 was against then No. 4 UCLA at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Chicago.Â
The Tar Heels have won five straight matches over No. 2 ranked teams in the country. The streak began against UCLA in the championship match of the 2013 NCAA Team Championship in Charlottesville, Virginia. It happened again versus Alabama in the quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Team Championship in Athens, Georgia, and continued against Florida at the 2015 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Virginia. The following year it was Georgia in the 2016 ITA Indoors in Madison, Wisconsin and last season the Heels downed Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.Â
Miami (3-3), one of nine ACC programs in the top 30, hosts No. 35 Virginia Tech on Friday at noon. The Hurricanes lineup features Estela Perez-Somarriba, the top-ranked singles player in the country and the defending NCAA singles national champion. The Madrid, Spain, native is 22-2 this season and a perfect 8-0 in the spring.Â
The Tar Heels return home to host No. 9 Virginia on Friday, Feb. 28 and the Hokies come to town on Sunday, March 1.Â
