April 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CARY, N.C. - Three-time defending champion and top seed North Carolina takes the court for the first time in the 2019 edition of the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship against either No. 8 seed Georgia Tech or No. 9 seed Syracuse on Friday afternoon. The quarterfinal match has been moved to Duke's Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center and will begin at 3 p.m. UNC men's tennis will also play indoors at Duke on Friday beginning at noon.
The remainder of the ACC Championship is expected to be back at Cary Tennis Park for the semifinals and finals.Â
Ranked No. 2 nationally this week, North Carolina (26-1) carries a 17-match winning streak into Friday's quarterfinal. The Tar Heels ran roughshod through the ACC by winning all 14 of its matches against the league to earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament for the sixth time in seven years.Â
Carolina is 7-3 all-time against the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Championship, most recently facing off in the 2018 semis that went to the Heels by a 4-3 margin. UNC won by the same score in the 2017 title match played down in Rome, Georgia.Â
The Tar Heels have never faced the Orange in the postseason.Â
A title this Easter weekend would be the fourth in a row and 10th in program history. Carolina has reached the semifinals each of the last 10 seasons and 13 times in 15 seasons under the leadership of head coach Brian Kalbas, who has four conference titles on his brilliant resume.Â
ACC Network Extra will carry both the semifinal on Saturday and Sunday's final at 2 p.m.Â
