Greene Jumps For A National Title On Friday
March 8, 2018 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - North Carolina's Nicole Greene will compete against 15 other competitors in the women's high jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at 7 p.m. ET in the Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M.
Greene, a junior from Ponte Vedra, Fla., returns to the indoor championships for the third time after earning indoor All-America honors in her first two seasons. As a freshman, she jumped 5-9¼ to take 12th at the indoor championships and to earn second-team All-America honors. Then as a sophomore, Greene jumped 6-0½, capturing first-team All-America honors with a fifth-place finish.
"This is literally the Sweet 16," Coach Nicole Hudson said. "You and 15 other girls have battled all season to earn the right to be here, so own that you're supposed to be here, you didn't sneak in - nobody sneaks into the NCAA Indoor Championships - this is your body of work, so let's celebrate the culmination of the work you put in this year."
Greene is coming off the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships where she won a conference high jump title for the first time in her career. Her winning jump of 6-2 (1.88 meters) is third in the NCAA. Greene nearly cleared 6-3¼ (1.91 meters) on her third attempt at the championships, just clipping the bar with her heel as she fell to the mat.
She has cleared 6-2 three time this season, first doing so at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup on January 13 to pass coach Hudson in the school record books and move into second all-time at UNC. She then jumped 6-2 at the USATF Indoor Championships on February 18 before clearing the mark once more just six days later at the ACC Championships on February 23 to take home the title.
"The season has gone really great, and I never like to put a number on anything but I feel like something good is going to happen," Greene said. "And if it is not, it's not meant to be, but I'm really excited going in to see what will happen."
Greene is the lone representative from the ACC in the event, and she will be going up against the best high jumpers in the country looking to become UNC's first track and field national champion since 2007.
"Let's have fun," Hudson said. "That's the biggest thing because if there was a secret formula, then every coach would be using it. I think this week becomes the culmination of all of the work that she put in starting last June, and that's why this is fun. It shouldn't be a panic. It shouldn't be worried. It shouldn't be stressed. This should be fun because the thing is you belong here, but more importantly you have earned the right to be here."
