DMR Scores First Points For Women At ACC Championships
February 22, 2018 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of North Carolina track and field teams opened the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex with the multi events and the distance medley relays.
In what was the fastest DMR race in the country this season, the team of Erin Edmundson, Jewel Christian, Blake Dodge and Caroline Alcorta secured the first five points for the Tar Heels with their fourth-place finish. The group clocked in at 11:13.86.
Both the winning team of Virginia Tech (10:57.60) and the runner-up Clemson (10:58.83) eclipsed the fastest time in the country to set the new marks on the season.
"It was a very exciting race with the top two times in the country," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "It shows the strength of the ACC. I'm really impressed with the effort that our ladies put forward in the race to get fourth place. Those ladies ran really well, competed to the end. We just had the gap early, but a very courageous effort by each of the ladies."
With the women's pentathlon and the DMR complete, the women are currently in a tie for seventh with the five points.
"We know it's going to be a tight competition throughout the weekend, so it was an exciting way to start the first day," Meaders said.
The men's DMR finished 12th in 10:09.31.
In the first four events of the men's heptathlon (60 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump), sophomore Will Eskew finished the day with 1,810 points and in 13th place. He also threw for a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 38-6 ¾ (11.75 meters), which is over two feet further than his previous best. Eskew will complete the Heptathlon on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, 1,000 meters and pole vault beginning at 10 a.m.
