Tar Heels Impress In Field Events at Bob Pollock Invitational
January 27, 2018 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. - North Carolina's Nicole Greene won the women's high jump by five inches, Darryl Shaw and Zay Paschall secured top-three finishes in the men's triple jump and Alex Cooke took second in the women's weight throw Saturday at the Bob Pollock Invitational. In total, seven individuals and one Tar Heel relay claimed top-three finishes this weekend at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
Greene, the junior out of Ponte Vedra, Fla., was quickly the last one left in the high jump Saturday afternoon. At 5-7 ¾ (1.72 meters), the final challengers missed the bar, and Greene cleared it on just her first attempt. She cleared the next two heights (1.82m, 1.85m) on her first attempts as well before bowing out to the 1.88m bar (the NCAA-leading height she cleared on her final attempt at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup on Jan. 13). Greene has cleared at least 6-0 ¾ (1.85m) in all three meets this season.
Juniors Shaw (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Paschall (Harrisburg, Pa.) took second and third in the men's triple jump. Shaw cleared 50 feet on each of his six jumps, with his best jump of 51-3 ¾ (15.64 meters) jump coming on his sixth and final attempt. The jump is the third best in the ACC this season and it is top-15 in the nation. Paschall jumped 50-7 ¼ (15.42 meters) on his final jump of the afternoon to take third in the event. Both Tar Heels are now in the top five in the ACC and top 25 in the country in the event on the season.
Cooke, the redshirt-junior out of Lowgap, N.C., took second in the women's weight throw with her sixth and final attempt of 64-0 ½ (19.52 meters). She has finished in the top two in the weight throw at each meet this season. Freshman Jill Shippee (Clifton Park, N.Y.) took fourth in the event with her final throw of 60-0 ½ (18.29 meters).
"We had a great second day here at Clemson," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "Nicole Greene continued what has been her best indoor season to date - winning the competition and jumping over six feet again. Alex Cooke remained very consistent, throwing over 64 feet for the second week in row and defeating the defeating the ACC leader in the event from NC State. The men's performance of the day was Darryl Shaw in the triple Jump as both he and Zay looked good for this point in the season."
