Tar Heels 4-0 After Shutout Of Drexel
September 6, 2015 | Field Hockey
The undefeated Tar Heels have played all four games on the road this season and have two more away games before their home opener on Sept. 18 against Louisville. Next up is a weekend in New York, with the Atlantic Coast Conference opener at No. 4 Syracuse on Sept. 12 and a non-conference game at No. 7 Albany on Sept. 13.
“I was excited to see our group put in a strong defensive performance today,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “It was a good day day because we earned a shutout and a solid win against a good and determined Drexel team.”
Wold's gamewinner came in the ninth minute of play. After a goalkeeper save, she grabbed the rebound and put it back for the lead.
Evert scored six minutes later, gathering a pass from senior Casey Di Nardo and sending it in from the front of the cage.
The Tar Heels' final goal came after halftime, in the 59th minute of play. In a scrum in front of the cage, Major got her stick on the ball and scored her second goal of the season to put UNC up 3-0.
Carolina finished with 26 shots to two by Drexel. Dragon goalkeepers Erin Gilchrist and Ainslie Rhoads each played a half, totaling 15 saves. UNC goalkeeper Shannon Johnson made one save in 68 minutes. Freshman Mary Kathryn Harrah played the final two minutes.
UNC has yet to give up a goal before halftime this season, but the Tar Heels had allowed one or two in the second half of their three previous games. On Friday at No. 15 Princeton, the Tigers scored twice in the final 10 minutes of play in a 5-2 Tar Heel win, including a goal with just seven seconds on the clock.
“We have to make sure we're paying attention to the time, score and scenarios,” Shelton said. “We didn't handle the last two minutes of the game against Princeton very well, but today we did that better. The Princeton game gave us a better focus today.”
Twenty-one Tar Heels got in the game on Sunday, with several playing for the first time this season and three – redshirt freshmen Mackenzie Mick and Tanner Watson and true freshman Mary Kathryn Harrah – seeing action for the first time in their UNC careers.
