Tar Heels Ground Flyers 6-1
February 21, 2015 | Softball
Statesboro, Ga. - Freshman Kaylee Carlson had another impressive showing inside the circle on Friday as the Tar Heels took down the Dayton Flyers 6-1 on the first day of the Eagle Classic II in Statesboro, Ga.
Carlson displayed her power and control over all seven innings. The first year fanned seven batters, walking only one, and allowed just one hit.
That hit resulted in the Flyers only run of the game, as Kennedy Haynes timed her swing just right to send a pitch over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the third and tie the game.
UNC was the first to the scoreboard however. Taylor Wike walked to lead off the game and was followed by Aquilla Mateen who laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first for a single. Wike would slide over to third after Amber Parrish hit into a fielder's choice that put out Mateen. Jenna Kelly would hit into a fielder's choice as well at the next at a bat, allowing Wike to score.
The Tar Heels reclaimed the lead for good in the fourth inning after Kendra Lynch smacked a single over the head of the centerfielder, allowing Kristen Brown to score from second and moving Dani Garcielita to third. After an Erin Satterfield walk Taylor Wike stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to bring in Garcielita and make it a 4-1 Carolina lead.
Coach Papa's squad would tack two more runs on the board in the fifth after Dayton pitcher Manda Cash tossed a wild pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Jenna Kelly to score. Tracy Chandless would pick up an RBI moments later after her hard grounder to shortstop gave Kristen Brown enough time to score from third.
Carolina would put up one more run in the sixth. Mateen again beat out the throw to first after laying down a bunt and immediately stole second. She used her wheels one more to score from second after Parrish singled through the left side to make the score 6-1 where it would stay.
North Carolina is back in action tomorrow for day two of the Eagle Classic II, facing Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m. and host Georgia Southern at 4:30 p.m.
