LeGette Has Historic Day As Softball Splits Doubleheader With No. 16 Virginia
March 8, 2026 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Emily LeGette had a career game on Saturday afternoon as softball picked up its first ranked win in four years.
Â
LeGette's heroics started early in game one blasting a home run to cut the Virginia lead to 3-1 in the first inning.
Â
Virginia would extend the lead to 7-1 but the Tar Heels didn't back down. A Shelby Barbee RBI single made it 7-2, then a bases loaded walk made it 7-3. UVA scored another but then a three run homer for LeGette made it an 8-6 ball game in the fourth inning.
Â
In the sixth Sanaa Thompson led the inning off with a homer to cut it to 8-7. A few batter later Shelby Barbee blasted one to center field to make it an 8-8 game.
Â
In the top of the 8th inning, Virginia scored to take a 9-8 lead. In the bottom half the top of the UNC order was due up. Thompson led things off with a single and it was followed by Lexie Roberts placing a perfect bunt to set LeGette up with two runners on and no one out.
Â
Coming into the game the only Carolina softball player to hit three home runs in a game was Haleigh Dickey, who did it twice, last happening in 2010. LeGette stepped to the plate and proceeded to put on show. She fought off four consecutive 3-2 pitches to stay alive and wait for her pitch before belting her third homer of the game, this time ending things to give UNC a massive win over No. 16 Virginia.
Â
The performance sets new career-highs for home runs in a game and RBI with seven. It is the second most RBI in a single game only one behind Kat Rodriguez who played with LeGette at American Heritage High School.

Â
Virginia hung around and stayed within reach eventually tying things up in the seventh after scoring five runs in the inning.
