Carolina Splits Final Day of Gamecock Invitational
February 15, 2015 | Softball
The Tar Heels closed out their stay at the Gamecock Invitational with a Valentine's Day doubleheader against the College of Charleston and host South Carolina. North Carolina would take the first game handedly against the Cougars 13-2, but ran into a Gamecock squad that came rearing right out of the gate in a 6-3 loss.
Jenna Kelly and Kendra Lynch each hit a grand slam against Charleston and Kelly would finish the game 2-2 with five RBIs.
In the second game South Carolina jumped out to an early lead that the Tar Heels would not be able to overcome.
Game One: College of Charleston
After Aquilla Mateen reached on an error by the Cougar's first baseman, Amber Parrish followed her with a single. Kristen Brown would walk to bring up Jenna Kelly with bases loaded. Kelly would crush the ball over the left field wall to give UNC a four run lead.
The scoring did not stop there. Carolina would register five hits in the first inning, including RBI singles from Aquilla Mateen and Taylor Wike as the Heels batted around the order.
Kaylee Carlson pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits in five innings, fanning six. Both Cougars hits came in the fifth inning.
Carolina would six more runs in the third after Charleston pitcher Valerie Cassell walked in a run and Lauren Walker singled through the left side with the bases loaded. Kendra Lynch would follow her with a grand slam to make the score 13-0.
The Cougar's would score two runs in the fifth before UNC closed out the game.
Game Two: South Carolina
After getting the leadoff hotter to fly out to right center, Kristen Struett singled up the middle for the Gamecocks and was followed by a Sarah Mooney home run to put UNC behind 2-0 after one inning.
Ansley Ard would hit a solo shot in the second to make it a three run Gamecocks lead. South Carolina would put up three more runs in the third inning on four hits to make it a 6-0 game.
Carolina would get on the board in the fourth inning after Tracy Chandless blasted a three run homer to shrink the gap to three runs but it would not be enough.
