
Heels Take Second at Freeman Memorial

LAS VEGAS, Nev. –The North Carolina duo of Whitney Kay and Hayley Carter won their doubles semifinal but came up short in the doubles finals Sunday at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
Kay and Carter beat the No. 2-seed Zoe Scandalis and Guiliani Olmos of USC in the semifinal 6-4. However, the pair lost in the final match to Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay of Stanford, 6-3. The victors were the No. 1-seed in the tournament.
Marika Akkerman and Cassandra Vazquez also competed in the consolation doubles match and fell to Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont of Tennessee 6-2.
In the added singles matches, Vazquz rallied to beat Anett Ferenczi-Bako of UNLV 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Akkerman lost in a hard-fought match 7-6, 6-4 against Westby of USC.
The Heels will be back in action at home Jan. 24-25against Minnesota and Boston College/LSU.
