Holness Sends #8 Carolina Over NC State
October 18, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (10-4, 4-2 ACC) notched its fifth-straight win when the Jamaican National sent a bullet into the far left corner from 15 yards out that proved to be the game winner.
Rob Lovejoy began the winning play with a pass to Andy Craven at the top of the 18-yard box, and after collecting the ball with his chest, Craven left the ball off to the right side for Holness and he notched his first goal of 2014.
NC State (5-5-3, 1-3-2 ACC) had its three-match unbeaten streak snapped, falling to 0-6-2 against the Tar Heels in the last eight meetings in Raleigh.
Lovejoy had the first legit scoring opportunity of the match in the 15th minute. He darted inside from his left wing position and released a right-footed shot that one hopped into the arms of Pack keeper Alex McCauley.
NC State later mounted a little bit of offense and came close to taking the lead in the 21st minute off a shot by Yanni Hachem, but Verneri Valimaa cleared the ball off the back line to keep the match scoreless midway through the opening half.
Both teams recorded five shots in the first half, but both clubs did not connect and went into intermission tied 0-0.
Raleigh native Alex Olofson put a nice effort on a shot from some 25 yards out that looked like it was seeking the upper right corner, but McCauley tipped the ball away.
Tyler Engel had a golden opportunity at the top of the 18 in the 73rd minute but his shot sailed over the cross bar to keep the match scoreless.
Brendan Moore made two saves to notch his eighth clean sheet of the season, and fourth in a row.
Carolina has the week off between games, before playing at Boston College next Friday at 7 p.m.
