Top-Ranked Tar Heels Earn 1-0 Shutout At Duke
October 18, 2014 | Field Hockey
"It's not easy to get a win over here at Duke," UNC coach Karen Shelton said after the game, standing at the midfield as her team stretched nearby. "I think both teams played hard and tough. It was a physical game - at times Duke had the better of it and at times we had the better of it."
Travers's goal, her first of the season, came on UNC's third penalty corner of the game. The Tar Heel team captain got the ball from sophomore Julia Young and launched a shot from the top-left of the circle.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half, although the Tar Heels got off just two shots in the period. With just over six minutes to play, Duke called a timeout and pulled goalkeeper Lauren Blazing in favor of another field player. The Blue Devils played the remainder of the game with that advantage but weren't able to capitalize.
Sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Johnson made seven saves for the Tar Heels, who earned their fourth shutout of the season. "I'm proud of Shannon Johnson for getting the shutout," Shelton said. "She played well under pressure tonight."
Next up for UNC is a trip to Lynchburg, Va., on Sunday to take on Liberty. The Tar Heels play the Flames at 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
