Tar Heels Earn Shutout At Liberty

The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team earned its second consecutive shutout Sunday, beating host Liberty 4-0 in Lynchburg, Va. Junior Nina Notman had two goals and an assist for the Tar Heels, who improved to 13-2 on the season. The Flames fell to 9-7.
Senior Loren Shealy scored the gamewinner in the 20th minute of play, deflecting in a shot by Notman to make the score 1-0. Just over three minutes later the Tar Heels added another, with Notman scoring on a penalty corner, assisted by Shealy and junior Emily Wold.
The 2-0 advantage carried into the second half of play until Carolina added to it in the 53rd minute. Junior Casey Di Nardo got a pass from Shealy and fired a shot past Liberty goalkeeper Mallor Cuccio to make the score 3-0 UNC.
The final goal came in the 60th minute. On a penalty corner, the initial try was no good, but Notman gathered a loose ball and sent it back in for the score and a 4-0 final.
UNC finished with 11 shots to five by Liberty. The Tar Heels had nine penalty corners and the Flames drew four.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday, hosting Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. Game time at Francis E. Henry Stadium is 1 p.m. UNC also plays at home on Sunday, hosting Pacific at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
