
Tar Heels Dominate At Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C.- The Carolina track and field team dominated at the second day of the Duke Invitational Saturday as five Tar Heels won their events. The meet was held at Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium Friday and Saturday.
Three seniors earned wins for Carolina on Saturday as LaToya James won the women's 100-meter hurdles (13.56), Charles Cox took first in the men's 200 (21.40) and Parker Smith won the men's pole vault (16-4 3/4).
The women's 4x400 team of James, senior Christine Johnson and juniors Tasha Stanley and Zoey Russell grabbed first in a time of 3:42.72, and the men's 4x400 team of Cox, freshman Devon Carter and sophomores Clayton Parros and Reynaldo Radlin also won in 3:12.10.
Carolina claimed four of the top eight spots in the women's 400 and long jump events. In the 400, Johnson took second in 55.07, Stanley finished third (55.20), Russell finished fourth (55.48) and junior Elizabeth Mott finished seventh (56.09). Sophomore Chrishawn Williams finished fourth in the long jump with 17-11, junior Jacinda Evans took fifth (17-8 1/4), junior Tyler Ford finished seventh (17-4 3/4), and senior Gabby Gioia took eighth (17-3 1/2).
Sophomore Malai Walker took second in the women's 200 in 24.59 and teamed up with Evans, Johnson and Russell to take third in the 4x100 in 46.98. Sophomore Kendra Schaaf finished third in the women's 3,000 in 9:40.63, and senior Emory Parsons placed fourth in the men's discus with a throw of 169-5.
In the women's high jump, senior Patience Coleman finished second (5-8) and sophomore Ariel Roberts took third (5-7). Freshman Sandi Morris, who set a new school record in the pole vault yesterday at 14-1 1/4, mixed things up a little today in the 100-meter hurdles. Morris finished fifth in 14.55.
The Tar Heels host the Kent Taylor- Joe Hilton Carolina Invitational next Saturday, April 16 at UNC's Belk Track and Fetzer Field. Field events will begin at 10:30 a.m., and track events start at 11 a.m.
