Women Finish Third, Men Fifth At ACC Outdoor Championships

ATLANTA - Junior Brie Felnagle won a pair of events Saturday in Atlanta at the ACC Outdoor Championships as she helped fuel the Tar Heel women to a third place finish, while the men on the back of Charles Cox finished fifth overall. Felnagle opened with a victory in the 1500-meter run besting teammate Megan Kaltenbach with a time of 4:19.94, before setting a site record in the 5000-meter run as she clocked a time of 16:22.66 for the title. Charles Cox held onto his spot as the top man in the 400-meter dash as he won the event in 45.95 for the win. Virginia Tech and Florida State copied its indoor performance as the Hokie women and Seminole men captured the outdoor titles.
Felnagle tallied two more ACC titles on Saturday to up her total to six in her career. Kaltenbach added to the Carolina point total as she placed eighth in the 5000 with a time of 17:11.59. Joining Felnagle and Kaltenbach in the scoring column for the Heels on Saturday was senior Tyra Johnson who closed our her ACC career with a fifth place showing in the 100-meter dash (12.04). Another Johnson, this time Christine, finished seventh in the 400-meter dash to pick up a pair of points for the women's team. Freshman Dominique replicated her prelim performance in the 800-meter run as she claimed second place with a time of 2:05.32 to earn All-ACC honors and set a new personal record in the process.
The trio of Porscha Dobson, LaToya James and Vanneisha Ivy all picked up points for Carolina on Saturday as the trio combined six points with Dobson finishing sixth (13.73), James seventh (13.79) and Ivy eighth in the 100-meter hurdles. While in the 400-meter hurdles, James came out with a fourth-place finish as she clocked a time of 58.23. Dobson added a point with an eighth place finish (1:05.09). The Tar Heels picked up a fourth place finish in the 4x100-meter relay as they crossed the line in 45.36 to set a regional mark. the 4x400-meter relay team fell just shy of a regional mark of their own as they finished fifth in a time of 3:42.78.
In the women's field events, Jocelyn White left her mark on the ACC in the discus recording a throw of 170-06 for a second place finish and All-ACC honors. Freshman Mary Angell opened her ACC career on a high note with a toss of 160-01 for a regional qualifying mark and a fourth place finish. Gabby Gioia, a day after finishing sixth in the heptathlon, placed 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 36-09.
The Tar Heel men entered the day in second place and only five and a half points behind the leader, NC State. The Tar Heel point total continued to rise on Saturday but it was not enough as they fell to fifth. Charles Cox kept the Tar Heels in it early as he claimed the 400 title with the third-fastest time in school history before finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash by clocking a time of 21.47. Adam Smith turned in a personal-best on Saturday as he finished fifth in the 800-meter run to score four more points for the Heels. Adam Cunningham tacked on two more points in the 1500-meter run when he clocked a 3:51.51 which was good for seventh place. Bremen de Haan finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles as he posted a time of 14.59 for three points.
The 4x100-meter relay team finished seventh with a time of 40.96 before the 4x400-meter relay team posted a third place showing, clocking a regional qualifying time of 3:08.61. In the field events, freshman Parker Smith scored two points in the pole vault as he cleared 15-11.00 which was good for seventh place. The triple jumping duo of Austin Davis and Donte Nall scored big for Carolina on Saturday as Davis finished third with a jump of 51-10.00, the fourth-longest in school history and a personal-best for Davis. Nall was not far behind after winning the high jump title on Friday, posting a jump of 48-11.50 which was good for sixth place. Freshman Emory Parsons recorded a throw of 160-04 in the discus which placed him sixth overall in his first ACC experience.
With the third and fifth place finishes the Tar Heels added to their Carlyle Cup lead with two more points as Carolina finished ahead of Duke in both the indoor and outdoor championships.
