Tar Heel Men In Second, Women Third After Day Two At ACCs

ATLANTA - Sophomore Donte Nall retained his title as the ACC's best high jumper on Friday as he claimed the ACC Outdoor title in the high jump to go along with his indoor title from February. Nall's jump of 7-00.50 secured his 10 points and keep the Carolina men in the top three after day two. The men have tallied 48 points through eight events and trail NC State by just five and a half points heading into the final day. The women picked up 10 points in the high jump as well when Patience Coleman cleared 5-10 to propel the women to third place with 38 points.
The multi athletes opened the day and Matthew Villemain helped add to the men's point total with a fifth place finish in the decathlon. Villemain opened day two with 695 points in the 110-hurdles as he clocked a time of 16.34 before closing with 690 more points in the 1500 (4:38.51). The sophomore also tallied 507 points in the discus (105-05), 659 in the pole vault (13-7.25) and 374 in the javelin (115-10).
Meanwhile, in the heptathlon Alexandra Coppadge and Gabby Gioia combined to score eight points for the women's team with Coppadge claiming fourth and Gioia taking home sixth. Coppadge opened with a jump of 5.30m in the long jump for 643 points and followed up that performance with a toss of 102-05 in the javelin for another 500 points. Coppadge then posted 731 points in the 800 as she clocked a time of 2:26.96. Gioia turned in a solid performance in her first ACC Outdoor Championships as she closed strong with a 2,095 point performance on Friday. The freshman opened with a leap of 5.36m in the long jump for 660 points before tallying a throw of 127-07 in the javelin for 646 points. Gioia then finished the 800 in 2:22.57 for 789 points and a sixth place finish.
The field events played a big role for the Tar Heels on Friday as both teams used used big performances from their field athletes to hold down top three places after the opening two days. On the men's side, Donte Nall stole the show as he cleared 7-00.50 for the title. Nall's championship winning jump came on his third and final attempt at 2.15m as he won by more than four inches over his nearest competitor. Matthew Villemain nearly scored in another event as he posted a top jump of 6-05 in the high jump, just two inches shy of the eighth and final scoring slot. In the women's high jump freshman Patience Coleman cleared 5-10 for her first ACC title to go along with a regional qualifying mark. Ashley Haislip tacked on two more points for the Tar Heels as she finished seventh in the high jump clearing 5-07.75. Alexandra Coppadge finished 11th with a jump of 5-05.25.
Senior Ian Reynolds picked up a point in the shot put as he tallied a throw of 53-07 to finish eighth overall in his final ACC Outdoor Championships. Freshman Walter Henning was right behind Reynolds as he finished ninth with a top throw of 52-01. Kimberly Warren copied Reynolds act in the women's shot put as she also claimed eighth place to provide another point to the women's total. Warren tossed the shot 45-01.75 for the eighth place finish, while Mary Angell took home 11th with a throw of 35-08.50.
Edward Baldwin III reached new heights in the long jump on Friday as he set a new personal best when he cleared 24-06.50 for a fifth place finish. Joining in the long jump effort was freshman Austin Davis who finished sixth as he cleared 23-09.50 as the duo combined for seven points. The women earned seven points of their own as LaToya James finished fourth (19-00.50) and Ashley Hill claimed seventh (18-05.00). In the final event of the day, Morgan Stengel finished ninth in the steeplechase as she clocked a time of 11:07.26, while on the men's side Ian Bracy finished 16th in a time of 9:40.64.
In qualifying action, the mid-distance duo of Megan Kaltenbach and Brie Felnagle both qualified for the 1500 final with Kaltenbach posting a time of 4:27.04 for second place and Felnagle coming in fourth (4:26.92). Freshman Adam Cunningham claimed a spot in the final of the 1500 as he finished the qualifier in 3:49.63. Bremen de Haan claimed the final spot in the 110-meter hurdles as he posted a time of 14.28 in the prelims. The Tar Heels should expect a solid point total from the women's 100-meter hurdles on Saturday as the hurdling trio of LaToya James, Vanneisha Ivy and Porscha Dobson all qualified for the eight-person final. Dobson turned in the sixth-fastest time at 13.58, while Ivy and James both finished with identical 13.75 times for seventh and eighth place.
Another freshman, Christine Johnson claimed a spot in a final when she posted a time of 54.90 in the 400-meter dash. Fellow freshman Charles Cox finished with the top qualifying time in the men's 400 as he clocked a time of 46.35 and will be the likely favorite in tomorrow's final. Senior Tyra Johnson posted an 11.83 in the prelims of the 100-meter dash to finish fifth. Adam Smith made his way to the 800-meter final as he clocked a time of 1:52.60 for the fourth-best time on the day. Freshman Dominique Jackson posted a time of 2:08.83 in the women's 800.
Reggie Berry and Brian Barrett fell just shy of a spot in the 400-meter hurdles final as Berry claimed 10th (53.47) and Barrett came in 12th (54.51). LaToya James and Porscha Dobson punched their tickets for another hurdle final as James finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.09, just ahead of Dobson who took home sixth in 59.56. Charles Cox made it 2 for 2 in qualifying as he claimed a spot in the 200-meter dash final with a fourth place finish in the prelims with a time of 21.18. Tyra Johnson fell just shy of the double dip as she finished 10th in the women's 200 with a time of 24.13.
Events will get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday as the Tar Heel men look for their first outdoor title since 1999 and the women look to pick up their for their 15th title and first since 2004 but will face an uphill battle as they trail Virginia Tech by 34 points.
