DURHAM, N.C. - Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland registered 10 kills and eight blocks at Duke Friday night but it was not enough as the Tar Heels fell 3-1 to the Blue Devils (11-5, 2-2 ACC) in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The loss is the fifth straight for the Tar Heels in the series with Duke and snaps a three-match winning streak that Carolina entered with. Suzanne Haydel chipped in with 11 kills and 17 digs in the defeat as Carolina falls to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina will take on Wake Forest on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Tar Heels fell behind early in the opening set as Duke scored eight of the opening 11 points to take an 8-3 lead. Carolina would close the deficit to three (6-9) on a pair of kills from Courtney Johnston and an attack error on the Blue Devils. Three consecutive Tar Heel attack errors would give the momentum right back to Duke as it extended the lead to 12-6. Duke would lead by as many as nine two different times in the set before closing it out at 25-16. The Tar Heels picked up four blocks in the set but were held in check offensively as they hit a match-low -.089.
Carolina made sure Duke would not run away with set two as the teams traded the opening 16 points. Suzanne Haydel picked up three kills and Heather Brooks added a pair as the teams were tied 8-8. A 5-1 run by the Blue Devils would give them the lead at 13-9 before the Tar Heels answered with a run of their own. Senior setter Stephanie Jansma picked up a kill and Lauren Prussing along with the help of Heather Brooks turned the set around. Prussing and Brooks combined on a block before Prussing followed with a kill and Brooks capped things off with a kill of her own forcing a Duke timeout.
The break served the Blue Devils well as they answered with three consecutive points forcing a Carolina timeout. Three more points from Duke made the score 19-13 as Duke looked to be pulling away. Another Brooks kill capped off a 3-1 run by the Tar Heels, as she looked to rally her team. Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland stepped up to the challenge and delivered two kills and assisted on a block to cut the deficit to one at 22-21. Following a Duke timeout, the Blue Devils and Tar Heels traded points as Duke looked to seal the match at 24-23. A huge block off the hands of Brooks and Johnston tied things up before Duke picked up a kill and a block to take a 2-0 match lead on the 26-24 win.
Despite the setback the Tar Heels continued their solid play in set three as they took an early 10-6 advantage. Hanson-Tuntland and Haydel helped propel Carolina to the early lead as Haydel recorded three kills and Hanson-Tuntland added a kill and a block to her totals. Duke would battle back and tie things up at 12-12. The set would be tied up five more times. The set was tied at 21-21 when Johnston drilled home a kill, before Duke took advantage of back-to-back Carolina errors to take a 23-21 lead.
A kill from Hanson-Tuntland cut the deficit to one before another Tar Heel error put the Blue Devils within a point of the win. A ball handling call went the way of the Tar Heels to make the score 24-23 before Hanson-Tuntland and Jansma combined for a block to tie things up and force a Duke timeout. Out of the break Carolina forced Duke into an error and another timeout with Carolina ahead 25-24. Hanson-Tuntland stepped up once again as she delivered another kill for the 26-24 win.
Duke took the lead midway through set number four at 12-7 after the teams traded the opening 12 points. A Tar Heel timeout gave Joe Sagula the chance to settle his squad down and they responded with a 6-1 run to even the set at 13-13. Back-to-back kills by the Blue Devils preceded a pair of kills from Johnston and Prussing as Carolina evened the set at 15-15. Duke took over from that point scoring four straight points with a Tar Heel timeout unable to stop the momentum.
A kill from Johnston made the score 20-18 in favor of Duke late in the set before Johnston stepped to the service line and delivered an ace to pull within one at 20-19. Back-to-back kills by Duke extended the Blue Devils' lead but the Tar Heels just would not quit as Jansma delivered her fourth kill of the night. Hanson-Tuntland reached double-figures in kills with the next point pulling Carolina within one. Prussing neutralized a Duke kill making the score 23-22 and putting the momentum on the Tar Heels' side. The momentum would not stay that way, however, as Duke closed out the set and the match with a pair of kills for the 25-22 set four win and 3-1 match win.
Jansma finished the night with 33 assists and an impressive 22 digs on the night. Johnston, Brooks and Prussing all finished with seven kills apiece, while Johnston tallied 14 digs and Brooks turned away six shots. Senior Brianna Eskola continued her quest towards the ACC dig record with 29 on the night and is now 331 shy of the record. The Tar Heels will return to action in less than 24 hours as they are set to face Wake Forest in Winston-Salem at 6 p.m. Saturday night. With the loss Carolina now leads the Carlyle Cup competition by a 2-1 margin after field hockey and women's soccer claimed wins over the Blue Devils earlier this year.
