WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A night after falling at Duke in four, the Tar Heel volleyball team was unable to bounce back Saturday night in Winston-Salem as Carolina fell in three sets (25-13, 28-26, 25-15) to Wake Forest. The Tar Heels were held in check offensively as they tallied a hitting percentage of .065 on the night en route to falling to 8-7 on the year and 2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Wake Forest improves to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels picked up the first point of the match via an attack error on the Demon Deacons but it would be their only lead of the set. Wake Forest took a lead at 5-2 before the Tar Heels closed it to within one with a Lauren Prussing kill and another Wake Forest attack error. From that point, the Demon Deacons would take control of the match with a 6-0 run to take an 11-4 advantage. Wake Forest would outscore Carolina 7-2 from that point to extend its lead to 11 before putting the set away at 25-13. The Tar Heels were unable to stop the Demon Deacon run as they converted just 37 percent of their sideout opportunities.
Carolina turned the tables in the second set by jumping out to a 10-6 advantage on the back of kills from Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland, Megan Owens and Cammy Kleinert in the early going. Freshman Erica Behm took over as the Tar Heel setter in the second frame in what would turn out to be the most competitive of the night. The Tar Heels would maintain the lead nearly the rest of the way before Wake Forest evened things up at 18-18. The Demon Deacons secured the next point thanks to a Tar Heel handling error before North Carolina called a timeout. Out of the break freshman Cammy Kleinert stepped up the Tar Heels' play with a kill before depositing a pair of service aces to give Carolina a 21-19 lead and forcing a Wake timeout. Wake Forest would even the score at 22-22 before the teams traded the next four points to push things to 24-24. A kill by Wake would be countered with a kill from Courtney Johnston and Hanson-Tuntland as Carolina was a point away from the win at 26-25. Three consecutive points for the Demon Deacons would crush the Tar Heels hope of equaling the match at 1-1.
Following the 28-26 set two defeat the Tar Heels looked to rebound in set three. Things would not turn out that way however, as Wake Forest was the first team to 15 jumping out to a 15-8 advantage. Carolina would pick up the next four points to cut into the Wake Forest lead before the Demon Deacons went on a 6-1 run to help seal the 25-15 set three and match win. Freshman Cammy Klienert led the Tar Heel attack with six kills, while Hanson-Tuntland and Owens chipped in five kills apiece. Backup setter Erica Behm finished the night with 17 assists, with fellow freshman Kaylie Gibson leading the Heels in digs with 10.
Carolina will look to bounce back at home this weekend when it hosts Virginia Tech and Virginia in a pair of ACC matches beginning Thursday night in the Dean E. Smith Center at 7 p.m.
