AUSTIN, TEXAS --- Senior Nick Owens turned in a runner-up performance in the hammer throw Thursday at the 80th installment of the prestigious Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium. The only athlete from North Carolina to compete Thursday, Owens hurled 222-5 to come in second, just behind Kansas' Egor Agafonov, who posted a 223-4 mark.
Owens, who threw 228-8 last week at the UNC Invitational to record the best mark in the nation this year, put up his top throw Thursday on his second attempt. His 222-5 mark was three feet better than the third-place finisher, Matej Muza from Virginia Tech, and gave the Tar Heels a great start to the weekend. Action at the Texas Relays continues all day Friday, while other members of the North Carolina men's and women's track teams will compete at the Pepsi Florida Relays and the Duke Invitational this weekend. Daily recaps will be available on TarHeelBlue.com.
