GAINESVILLE, FLA. --- Abby Kimball cleared 12-5 1/2 to win the pole vault at the Pepsi Florida Relays Friday, leading the way for North Carolina at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track. Athletes on the UNC men's and women's track teams were also in action at the Texas Relays and the Duke Invitational on the day.
Kimball cleared the bar at 12-5 1/2 on her second attempt at the height, achieving an NCAA regional qualifying standard in the process. Teammate Rhian Jenks tied Florida's Lori Bowen for the runner-up position with an 11-11 3/4 effort, giving the Tar Heels a dominant performance in the event.
Tyra Johnson's 11.95 time in the women's 100-meter dash gave her a ninth-place finish and highlighted the day for the UNC women sprinters at the Florida Relays.
Meanwhile, Nick Owens added to Thursday's runner-up finish in the hammer throw at the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with a fourth-place toss in section B of the men's discus on Friday. Owens threw 179-7 to complete an impressive two days of competition in Austin.
Carolina had plenty of athletes in action at the Duke Invitational in Durham as well. Nyoka Norman ran 1:02.68 to lead a trio of Tar Heels in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Norman's time gave her a third-place finish, while Colleen Farley's 1:02.98 put her in sixth and Erika Foushée's 1:03.14 earned her eighth position.
Additionally, Lauren Holesh took seventh in the women's 5,000 meters, clocking a 17:45.93.
