NEW LONDON, N.C. - After a first-round 69 and second-round 70, Martin Ureta fired a 74 Sunday at the ACC Championship and finished in fifth place overall. Carolina fired an six-over 294 to place them in sixth. The Tar Heels were beat by Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech who tied for first place, as well as Clemson, Duke, and Florida State.
Ureta, a senior out of Santiago, Chile, struggled at the beginning of the day having four bogeys on his first 10 holes. However, he recovered shooting two-under on his final eight holes making a push toward the top of the leader board. Entering the third round, he lead by one stroke, however Florida State's Jonas Blixt carded a seven-under 65 in the final round to finish the top individual at minus eight.
David Holzworth was the second best finisher for Carolina in a tie for 15th. Barden Berry shot two-over on the day and finished in a tie for 25th. Reed Darsie was the only Tar Heel under par today carding a one-under 71 and finished in a tie for 30th. Robert Riesen fired four-over on the day and finished tied for 44th. Overall, coach John Inman was disappointed saying, "It was just a bad day. We never got anything going. Unfortunately, we've had a few of those rounds and it's always been the last day. We just need to finish our tournaments a little better."
Georgia Tech, who started the day in the lead, shot four-under on the day and ended up tying for the lead. Virginia Tech was red-hot all, shooting a nine-under 279 on the day to tie for the lead. Four strokes behind the leaders was Clemson after shooting a three-under 285. Duke and Florida State finished in a tie for fourth.
One stroke behind Blixt was Cameron Tringale firing Georgia Tech who started and finished the day in second place. Kyle Stanley from Clemson and Ryan Sypniewski from Virginia Tech finished in a tie for third at minus six.
Duke finished ahead of North Carolina and therefore grabbed the lead in the Carlyle Cup standings, 13.5 to 12.5.
This is the sixth straight year the ACC Championship has been played at the Old North State Club. Featuring a par 72, 7,100 yard layout, the venue has hosted the event 11 times overall.
