FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- The University of North Carolina women's distance medley relay team won its second NCAA championship in as many years Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The team of senior Megan Kaltenbach, junior Tyra Johnson, senior Georgia Kloss and sophomore Brie Felnagle ran a time of 10 minutes, 59.46 seconds to dominate the field and establish a new American record in the event.
The title was Carolina's third in five years in the women's DMR. Kaltenbach, Kloss and Felnagle teamed with Danielle Rogers to win in 2006, while the foursome of Erin Donohue, Shalane Flanagan, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt claimed the NCAA crown in 2003. The 2002 relay was an NCAA runner-up and set an American record of 10:59.76 that stood until Friday night.
The win nets the Tar Heels 10 points in the team competition. Action resumes tomorrow morning at 11.
