CLEMSON, S.C. --- Sophomore Brie Felnagle and the men's 4x400-meter relay team joined Nick Owens - who won the weight throw Friday - as event champions on Saturday for North Carolina at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships held at the Clemson indoor facility.
Felnagle's win in the 800 meters earned her an NCAA provisional qualifying time in 2:06.27. The mark moves her to third all-time at UNC in the event and represents her third qualifying mark in three separate events this season. It helped the No. 15 women to a 75.5 point total, giving them a third-place finish behind Virginia Tech (136) and Miami (99), respectively. The men were led by a huge win from the 4x400-meter relay team in earning 56 points and fifth place overall as a team. Florida State claimed its fifth straight conference title, compiling a 128-point total.
Felnagle was joined as an All-ACC performer in the 800 by senior Georgia Kloss, who finished third in 2:07.68. Junior Colleen Farley also scored in the event, placing sixth in her best time of the year in 2:12.33.
A runner-up finish by Felnagle in the mile gave her a second All-ACC performance on the day as she ran a 5:03.15. Tyra Johnson joined Felnagle in earning two All-ACC accolades herself Saturday as she finished third in both the 60-meter dash (7.47) and the 200-meter dash (24.30). Both times were new career bests, and the 7.47 time moved her to second all-time in the event at Carolina.
Vanneisha Ivy was another standout performer for UNC as she finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional mark of her own in 8.29. That time also moved her to second in school history in the event. Ivy joined Johnson as a scorer in the 60-meters as well, placing eighth in 7.68.
Other scorers for the women on Saturday were Ashley Haislip in the high jump (4th/ 5-8), Megan Kaltenbach in the 3,000 (5th/9:40.19), Porscha Dobson in the 60-meter hurdles (6th, 8.59), Erika Foushée in the triple jump (39-8 3/4) and the 4x400-meter relay team (7th, 3:47.06). Kelly Fazekas and Kimberly Warren finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the shot put with 47-9 1/4 throws.
The men were led by the title-winning 4x400-meter relay team, which posted a 3:15.00 time to edge Maryland in the event. Brycen McCrary ran the opening leg for the Tar Heels before giving way to Reggie Berry. Ryan Booker took the baton next for UNC, and Clay Ragan clinched the win for Carolina in the closing leg to give the men their second title on the weekend.
Donte Nall also contributed for the men, following up his fourth place finish in the high jump Friday by scoring points in the triple jump, leaping 47-1 1/2 to finish eighth.
The UNC men also picked up points from numerous other standouts. Ian Reynolds finished fourth in the shot put with a season-best 55-5 1/2, while Reggie Berry's 21.62 was fifth-best in the 200 meters. Clay Ragan had a second impressive performance on his day, finishing fifth in the 800 meters with a 1:54.17 time. Rounding out the scoring on Saturday for Carolina was Bremen de Haan's seventh-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles as he clocked a 8.20.
North Carolina will next compete at a pair of meets next weekend as it tries to prepare and qualify more athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships in two weeks.
