ACC Championships Open With Multis

CLEMSON, S.C. --- The women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon kicked off competition at the 2007 ACC Indoor Championships at the Clemson indoor facility Thursday.
North Carolina freshman La'Shonda Carter set a new school record in the pentathlon for the Tar Heels, finishing with 3,586 points to break Desiree Jones' mark by two points. Her total placed her in a tie for eighth overall and earned the UNC women a half point on the first day of action. Alexandria Coppadge also competed for UNC, placing 13th with 3,410 points.
Carter's top performances came in the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles as she topped 800 points in each event.
Carolina men Mateo Sossah and Daniel Keller currently sit fourth and sixth through four events in the men's heptathlon. Matthew Villemain is in 13th-place.
Sossah accrued 2,852 points on Thursday, with his top score coming in the high jump. His 6-8 3/4 clearance in that event gave him 850 points. Keller's best event was also the high jump as he collected 740 points with a 6-4 leap. He has 2,797 points overall.
The men's heptathlon concludes Friday with the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meters.
Competition in the non-multi events begins Friday at 1 p.m. with the men's long jump.
