CLEMSON, S.C. --- Senior Nick Owens won his third career ACC title - and his second in the weight throw - at the ACC Indoor Championships held at the Clemson indoor facility Friday, spurring the North Carolina men to the third spot in the team standings through six events. The UNC women sit in ninth place after six events, with Saturday marking the final day of competition.
Owens' 67-7 mark came on his second throw and was good enough to better the field by more than three feet. The toss also earned Owens All-ACC accolades - the only Tar Heel to accomplish the feat on the day.
In addition to Owens, the UNC men also received strong efforts from its multis performers, getting points from two different athletes Friday. Mateo Sossah maintained his standing from Thursday, finishing fourth in the event and moving to second on the school's all-time list with a 5,344 point total. The score was good enough to provisionally qualifiy Sossah for the NCAA Championships as well. Daniel Keller, for his part, finished sixth with the third-best score in school history at 5,023 points. Sossah's best event proved to be the 1,000 meters as he took first and earned 922 points with his 2:35.67 time.
Freshmen Donte Nall and Edward Baldwin III both narrowly missed out on earning All-ACC honors in their respective jump events. Nall's 6-9 3/4 clearance in the high jump was a season-best and put him fourth overall, while Baldwin's 23-0 3/4 leap in the long jump also placed him fourth.
The men's distance medley relay team of Nick Krouse, Brycen McCrary, Adam Smith and Tristram Thomas also scored points for UNC, finishing seventh in 10:07.96.
On the women's side, North Carolina got points on Friday from two pole vaulters and it's distance medley relay team.
Freshman Abby Kimball and senior Rhian Jenks cleared 12-5 1/2 and 12-1 1/2 in the pole vault to finish fourth and tied for eighth, respectively, in the event. The women's distance medley relay team of Emily Hoffman, Callie Pottinger, Georgia Kloss and Megan Kaltenbach ran a 11:28.03 time to place third overall.
A handful of Tar Heels also used Friday to qualify for Saturday finals. Tyra Johnson (7.48) and Vanneisha Ivy (7.57) qualified third and eighth, respectively, in the women's 60-meters, while Vanneisha Ivy (8.50) and Porscha Dobson (8.54) were the fifth- and sixth-fastest qualifiers, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Bremen de Haan posted the eighth-best time of the day with his 8.16 clocking to qualify for the finals.
The Tar Heel women also had three athletes qualify in the women's 800 meters. Brianna Felnagle (2:10.59) and Georgia Kloss (2:12.16) each won their heats, while Colleen Farley's 2:12.02 time moved her through to Saturday. Clay Ragan will compete in the finals of the men's 800, his 1:53.18 making him the sixth-fastest qualifier.
UNC also had the fourth-fastest qualifiers in both the men's and women's 200. Reggie Berry qualified fourth in 21.56, while Tyra Johnson ran a 24.47 to move on.
