Tar Heels Finish Fourth at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Championship

Greensboro, N.C. - North Carolina finished in fourth place at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Championship. After holding a one-stroke lead after the second round, the Tar Heels shot two-over par 290 to finish at six-over 870. Louisville who started one-stoke off the lead shot a nine-under 279, behind the play of tournament champion Derek Fathauer, to finish the tournament at four-under 860 and win by three strokes. Mississippi State had the 2007 tournament low team round at 11-under 277 to finish at one-under par. UCF climbed up three spots, from tied for sixth to third place, in the final round with a nine-under 279, to finish at two-over 866. Kent State rounded out the top five at nine-over 873.
The top two Tar Heels started continued to play well and maintain their positions in the final round. Sophomore David Holzworth and senior Barden Berry tied for fourth place at three-under par, after both firing one-under 71 to finish at three-under 213. They finished seven strokes off the lead. Freshman Kevin O'Connell tied for 15th place after shooting one-over 73 in the final round to finish at one-over 217. Junior Robert Reisen fired his second consecutive 75 to finish tied for 57th place at 11-over 227. Senior Reed Darsie tied for 66th at 13-over 229 after shooting a five-over 77 in the final round.
Derek Fathauer of Louisville started and finished the day with the lead. He carded a four-under 68 to finish 10-under par 206. Fathauer won by five strokes over Brett Cairns of Kent State who shot one-under on the day to finish at five-under 211. Greg Forest of UCF made a charge on the final day, shooting six-under 66, to move up to third place from sixteenth. Berry and Holzworth of the Tar Heels tied with Adam Hadwin of Louisville at three-under 213 in tied for fourth place. The UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Championship is being played at Forest Oaks Country Club. The tournament features eight of the top 40 teams in the nation and is being played from the Championship par-72 7197-yard course.
