Brinkley Fuels Tar Heels In Sweep Of Wolfpack

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Bekah Brinkley recorded her third straight game in double-figure kills with 14 as she led the Tar Heels to a 3-0 sweep of NC State Tuesday night in Carmichael Auditorium. Carolina has now won 18 consecutive matches against the Wolfpack. The Tar Heels will host Boston College on Friday at 7 p.m. and Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Carolina opened the match in impressive fashion as the Tar Heels cruised to a 30-17 win. Bekah Brinkley continued her impressive play with four kills on just six attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Sophomore Megan Owens was not far behind as she tallied a .571 percentage with four kills as well. The Tar Heels hit .273 as a team and blocked four balls in the victory.
The Tar Heels and Wolfpack battled in the beginning of the game as both teams were tied at 8-8 before the Tar Heels went to work and took nine of the next 11 points to take a 17-10 lead. Carolina would lengthen its lead to 25-17 late in the game before going on a game-sealing 5-0 run to claim the 13-point win.
Unfortunately for the Tar Heels the momentum would not follow with them into game two as NC State controlled the game from the get go. The Tar Heels would hold a brief lead at 13-12 before the Wolfpack regained control. Carolina would not quit as usual and regained the lead at 23-22 and appeared to be closing out the game at 29-27 before NC State tallied back-to-back points to even the game at 29 all. A Wolfpack service error combined with a kill from Heather Brooks gave the Tar Heels a two games to none lead.
rinkley kept her torrid pace going in game two with six more kills. Ashley Board kept the Tar Heels in the match defensively picking up a game-high 10 digs in the win. The Tar Heels out hit NC State .180-.079 in game two.
Carolina put it all together in game three as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led by as many as 12 points in the match. The Wolfpack picked up three points late to make the final score 30-15 as the Tar Heels swept their seventh match of the year and captured their 18th consecutive match over their rivals from Raleigh.
rinkley led the Tar Heels in kills once again, with 14 from her outside hitter position. Brinkley along with Heather Brooks and Christie Clark all finished the night with a hitting percentage above .400 as Carolina hit .269 as a team.
The Tar Heels will host Boston College and Maryland on Friday and Sunday to wrap up a full weekend of volleyball action.
