Carolina Sweeps Boston College

CHapel Hill, N.C. - Christine Vaughen tallied 11 kills and hit an impressive .562 as the North Carolina volleyball team captured its second straight 3-0 victory Friday night in Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels took the match 30-23, 30-14 and 30-26 over the visiting Boston College Eagles (11-14, 5-10 ACC) after claiming a 3-0 win over NC State earlier in the wekk. Carolina now improves to 11-13 overall and 7-8 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Carolina opened the match with an impressive 30-23 game one win on the back of a four-kill performance from both Christine Vaughen and Lauren Prussing. The Tar Heels trailed early as the visiting Eagles took a very early 7-6 advantage. Back-to-back blocks by the Tar Heels gave Carolina an 8-7 lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Carolina held a three to four-point margin the majority of game to take a 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels steamrolled the Eagles in second game taking a 2-0 lead with a big 30-14 win. Carolina doubled up BC in the early going taking a 10-5 lead. The margin would only grow from that point as the Tar Heels would outscore the Eagles 20-9 from then on for the big win. Carolina tallied a pair of runs of five points or more, including a 7-0 run that featured a pair of blocks from Heather Brooks and two kills from Sue Haydel. Six different Tar Heels recorded two kills or more in the victory and were led by Haydel, Vaughen and Brooks who all recorded three apiece. Carolina hit an astonishing .500 in the game committing just one attack error.
Carolina was looking for its second consecutive sweep of the week in game three and the Tar Heels did not disappoint the Carmichael crowd by delivering 30-26 victory for the 3-0 sweep. Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland tallied a game-high four kills, including a monster kill to close out the match and give Carolina point number 30. The Tar Heels trailed just once in the game at 18-15 after a 5-0 BC run, but the Tar Heels were able to battle back and take game three. Carolina closed the game strong as Megan Owens delivered back-to-back aces following an Eagles timeout before Hanson-Tuntland delivered the dagger.
The middles led the way for the Tar Heels on the evening as Christine Vaughen and Heather Brooks combined for 19 kills and eight blocks. Vaughen tallied a .562 hitting percentage in the win as she finished with just two errors in the three games.
Carolina will look to continue its win streak on Sunday when it takes on Maryland in a revenge battle at 1 p.m. in Carmichael.
