CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Brian Shriver provided all the offense No. 1 North Carolina would need in its fourth consecutive shutout, a 1-0 win over No. 13 Penn State, Sunday in the finale of the Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (4-0-0) have not allowed a goal this season and have posted four consecutive shutouts to open the season for the second year in a row.
In the first game of the day, No. 11 Wake Forest rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to post a 3-2 overtime win over No. 20 Ohio State. The Demon Deacons (4-0-0) were awarded the Carolina Nike Classic title on goal differential. Wake Forest outscored its opponents, 5-2, while UNC posted a 2-0 edge on PSU and OSU.
Shriver gave the Tar Heels their lone goal in the 23rd minute with his first score of the season. The Clearwater, Fla., product hammered home a one-time volley from eight yards out off a cross from senior Corey Ashe, who sent the ball into the box from the left corner. Sophomore midfielder Scott Campbell started the play by fighting though the Penn State midfield and feeding Ashe on the left flank. Ashe and Campbell both picked up their first assists of 2006 on the play.
Shriver, who now has six career goals, is the fifth different Tar Heel to score this season.
Carolina missed on several chances to put the game out of reach in the second half, but could not add to its lead. Freshman Zach Loyd, who scored the game-winner in Friday's win over Ohio State, just missed with a shot off the crossbar in the 75th minute.
But the Shriver goal would prove to be enough, as Carolina shutout its 12th opponent in its last 14 games dating to last season and its 19th in 28 games since the start of the 2005 campaign. Senior goalkeeper Justin Hughes made four saves - all in the first half - to pick up his fourth shutout of the year and the 17th of his career. Penn State keeper Conrad Taylor made five saves.
The four straight shutouts to open the season equal a school record set a year ago. The Tar Heels tied NC State, 2-2, in their fifth game and face the Wolfpack Wednesday at Fetzer Field.
Hughes earned a spot on the all-tournament team, along with defenders Ted Odgers and Andre Sherard.
Penn State (1-3-0) held a 9-8 edge in shots, but the Tar Heels, who defeated the Nittany Lions for the first time in seven all-time meetings, outshot PSU 4-1 in the second half.
Carolina kicks off Atlantic Coast Conference play against rival NC State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fetzer Field. Tar Heel fans can download a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for tickets for Wednesday's game at TarHeelBlue.com.
