No. 4 Tar Heels Even ACC Record With Win At No. 20 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore Heather Kendell scored two goals and assisted on another as the North Carolina field hockey team beat host Virginia 3-1 on Sunday in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest. The fourth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while Virginia fell to 8-6 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
UNC scored on three of its seven penalty corners in the win. The first goal came five minutes into the game, when Kendell tipped in a shot by senior Naomi Weatherald. The Tar Heels went up 2-0 with 11:18 remaining in the half when Weatherald's shot got past Virginia goalkeeper Katherine Blair. Assists went to Kendell on the push in and sophomore Xan Funk on the stick stop.
The Cavaliers drew within a goal when Lindsay O'Bannon scored unassisted four minutes into the second half. Kendell, a midfielder from Chapel Hill, got her second goal of the day with 26:18 remaining to make the score 3-1. She now has seven goals and a team-high eight assists on the season.
On the day, UNC had nine shots to Virginia's four, all of which came in the second half.
Carolina will wrap up its ACC season on Sunday, when No. 2 Maryland comes to Chapel Hill. Game time at Henry Stadium is 1 p.m.
