CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Third-ranked Maryland scored two first-half goals and went on to a 2-1 win over No. 4 North Carolina in Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey action Sunday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels (12-4, 2-3 ACC) came up with a goal in the 68th minute of play to attempt a late rally and avoid the homefield shutout by the Terrapins (16-2, 4-1 ACC) in the final ACC contest of the regular season for both teams.
"I'm disappointed that we weren't able to compete better against a talented and well-coached Maryland team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I don't feel like we played our best today."
Both of Maryland's goals came on rebounds after UNC goalkeeper Katy Tran had made saves. The first, just over four minutes into the game, was by freshman Susie Rowe, who put back the rebound after a penalty corner shot by junior Paula Infante.
The Terrapins made the lead 2-0 just before halftime after another shot by Infante was saved. Senior Jackie Ciconte was waiting just in front of the goal and put the rebound back for her team-leading 15th score of the season.
UNC's only goal came on a penalty corner with 2:21 to play. Freshman Britt van Beek tipped in a shot by junior Rachel Dawson to put the Tar Heels on the board and attempt a late comeback, but UNC wasn't able to come up with another goal in the final two minutes of play. "When we scored the goal I felt like we played with more energy and hustle," Shelton said. "Why we didn't play that way the rest of the game, I don't know."
On the day, Maryland had 20 shots to UNC's seven and eight penalty corners to four by the Tar Heels.
Carolina closes out the regular season with a pair of games next weekend. On Saturday, the Tar Heels travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on No. 7 Old Dominion. On Sunday, UNC hosts No. 6 Penn State for Senior Day.
