CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Playing on its home field for the first time this season, the North Carolina field hockey team defeated James Madison 9-1 Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels improved to 6-0 with the win, while JMU fell to 1-5.
Junior Katy Potter finished the day with three goals and two assists for eight points and the first hat trick of her UNC career. Junior Kelsey Keeran and freshman Rachel Dawson scored two goals each, and the other two came from sophomore Karen Mann and freshman Laree Beans.
James Madison's goal was scored by senior Amy Cordes with 15:55 to play in the game. The goal, which Cordes tipped in off a shot by senior Dana Weaver, was the first penalty corner goal UNC has given up this season and just the third goal the Tar Heels have allowed.
Potter opened the scoring with 28:17 to play in the first half with a shot from 15 yards out on a pass from junior Kerry Falgowski. With 12:16 to play in the half, Dawson scored on a straight shot on a penalty corner, assisted by Potter and junior Laura Douglas.
The Tar Heels then scored three times in the final 5:07 of the half. Keeran put back a rebound after a saved shot on a UNC penalty corner, then Potter scored an unassisted goal from the field. The final goal of the half came with 58 seconds to play as Mann dove to tip in a pass from redshirt freshman Brooke Miller.
Less than a minute into the second half, UNC drew a corner and Potter tipped in a shot by Dawson. With 25:48 to play in the game, Carolina drew its first penalty stroke of the season and Keeran sent her shot past JMU goalkeeper Lauren Hartzler to put the Tar Heels up 7-0. Cordes then scored the Dukes' only goal before UNC got two more from Beans, who drew the goalkeeper out and shot into an empty goal, and Dawson, who hit another straight shot on a corner.
The Tar Heels play next on Saturday, when they host No. 6 Old Dominion for a 1 p.m. game at Henry Stadium. JMU's next game is on Wednesday evening at No. 16 Virginia, which then travels to play at UNC on Sunday.
