CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by junior Laura Douglas's hat trick, the North Carolina field hockey team closed out its regular-season home schedule Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win over Radford at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The fourth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 14-4 on the season, while the Highlanders fell to 7-11.
Carolina scored five goals in the first half. The first was by junior Kelsey Keeran, assisted by junior Katy Potter with 28:35 to play in the half. Potter scored the next goal, slipping the ball past Radford goalkeeper Amy Dietz after the initial shot on a penalty corner was saved. Keeran, the team's leading scorer, added another goal on an assist by sophomore Karen Mann with 19:26 to play in the half to give UNC a 3-0 lead. The next three goals all came from Douglas, two in the final 6:07 of the first half and one with 10:07 to play in the game. "I've been trying to get off quicker shots, and I thought this was a good game to try to take a few," said Douglas, who scored on all three shots she took.
UNC started the afternoon with Senior Day ceremonies honoring Mary Havell, a back from Chevy Chase, Md., who is a junior in eligibility but a senior academically and will graduate in May.
"We talked about how we wanted to honor Mary and honor the game by playing well today, and I think we did that," Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "And Mary did herself proud by playing a great game."
The shutout was the eighth in this season's 18 games for UNC and goalkeeper Katy Tran.
The Tar Heels close out the regular season next weekend, playing at No. 9 Old Dominion on Saturday and at No. 14 William & Mary on Sunday. After that, UNC will turn its attention to the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, set for Nov. 6, 7 and 9 in Charlottesville, Va. The five-team field will include the top four teams in the country. Currently, Wake Forest is No. 1, Duke is No. 2, Maryland is No. 3 and UNC is No. 4.
