NORFOLK, Va. - Laura Douglas scored twice and two players came off the bench to score a goal each as the North Carolina field hockey team defeated Old Dominion 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. The No. 4 Tar Heels improved to 15-4, while No. 12 ODU fell to 10-9.
Douglas, a junior midfielder from New Zealand, has five goals over the last two games. She had a hat trick in UNC's previous outing, a 6-0 win over Radford last Sunday. UNC's other goals came from sophomore Karen Mann and redshirt freshman Brooke Miller.
Douglas scored the game's first goal, an unassisted shot nearly 16 minutes into play. ODU's Angie Loy evened the score less than a minute later, and the game stood 1-1 at halftime. The Lady Monarchs opened the second half with a goal by Chilly Banuelos to take a 2-1 lead, but the Tar Heels responded with three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of play to claim the win. Mann scored off a rebound of a save by ODU goalkeeper Tina Walker with 19:11 to play. Just over three minutes later, Douglas put Carolina ahead for good with her second goal, assisted by junior Kerry Falgowski. Miller scored the game's final goal on a breakaway with 7:14 to play.
The win was UNC's second of the season over Old Dominion, which split with the Tar Heels last year (ODU won 3-2 in penalty strokes in Norfolk) and leads the overall series 30-25-2. Carolina won the season's first matchup 4-0 in Chapel Hill on Sept. 20.
UNC plays its final game of the regular season Sunday at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. The Tribe, ranked 14th in this week's national poll, defeated No. 8 Princeton 3-2 on Friday to improve to 12-4 on the season.
