BOONE, N.C. - Despite a slow start, the second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team defeated host Appalachian State 6-0 Friday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 12-1 heading into Sunday's Atlantic Coast Conference matchup with Virginia, while ASU fell to 7-5.
Most of the first half was scoreless, but sophomore Karen Mann got UNC on the board with two seconds to play before halftime when she put back a saved shot for Carolina's first goal. In the second half, the Tar Heels exploded for five goals to take control of the game. Junior Laura Douglas opened the scoring less than two minutes into the half on an assist from freshman Laree Beans. Less than five minutes later, junior Kerry Falgowski scored to put UNC up 3-0. Freshman Rachel Dawson scored the next goal on a penalty stroke, her first of the season. The Tar Heels then got two late goals off penalty corners, one by Dawson with a minute to play and the other on a tip-in by junior Kelsey Keeran with 15 seconds on the clock. Both were assisted by Douglas.
UNC coach Karen Shelton attributed her team's slow start to the unfamiliar surface at Kidd Brewer. "We played on field turf, which is different from what we're used to, and I think it took us a half to become accustomed to the different way that the ball behaves on that surface," she said. "Considering that, I was please with the win. I thought we responded well in the second half and got contributions from just about everybody on the team."
The Tar Heels, 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, meet the Cavaliers Sunday at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va., for an ACC game. No. 18 Virginia is 6-6 on the season heading into Friday evening's game against Quinnipiac.
