
Carolina Picks Up ACC Win At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, N.C. - North Carolina scored five first-half goals and played shutout defense to earn a 6-0 win over Virginia Sunday in Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey action. The No. 2 Tar Heels improved to 13-1 overall, 2-1 in the ACC. No. 18 Virginia fell to 7-7 (0-2 ACC).
Freshman Rachel Dawson scored two goals for the Tar Heels and they got one each from Katy Potter, Kelsey Keeran, Kerry Falgowski and Brooke Miller.
UNC scored its first three goals penalty corners. The first came 13 minutes into the game, when Dawson scored on a straight shot, assisted by Keeran and Laura Douglas. Three minutes later, UNC drew another corner. After Dawson's initial shot was saved, Potter was there to stick in the rebound for a 2-0 lead. Carolina then struck again on another corner as Carey Fetting-Smith sent a ball into the circle that was tipped into the cage by Keeran, putting UNC up 3-0 with 12 minutes to play before halftime.
Junior Amber Chambers assisted on the next two goals. On the first, she sent a ball upfield for Falgowski, who dribbled into the circle and shot to the boards, giving UNC a 4-0 lead with 9:41 to play in the half. Four minutes later Chambers took the ball up the left side of the field and sent it into the circle, where Dawson converted for a 5-0 lead.
In the second half, Miller scored the first goal of her career at the 48:42 mark of the game, putting the Tar Heels up by the eventual final score. The win was the second 6-0 road victory of the week for Carolina, which won by the same score at Appalachian State on Friday.
Virginia goalkeeper Logan Carr made a career-high 18 saves as UNC outshot the Cavaliers 30-7. Junior Katy Tran made four saves for the Tar Heels.
UNC's next game is on Saturday, when the Tar Heels travel to play Duke in Durham, N.C. The Tar Heels host Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m.
