CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Marcus Storey scored the game-winning goal late in the first half as North Carolina shutout South Carolina, 2-0, in men's soccer action from Fetzer Field on Friday evening. The victory is the 175th in the 14-season UNC head coaching career of Elmar Bolowich, making him the winningest men's soccer coach in Tar Heel history. Bolowich surpassed Marvin Allen (174 wins) for first place on the UNC coaching wins chart on Friday. Bolowich has a career record of 175-97-14.
The game was the final regular-season home appearance for Tar Heel seniors Matt Crawford, Mike Gell, Ryan Kneipper and David Testo. It was UNC's fifth shutout win of the season.
The Tar Heels improve to 13-5-1 this season and have gone 5-0-1 in their last six games. South Carolina falls to 10-7-1.
Storey scored the only goal of the first half and the eighth of the season on what might have been the prettiest goal of UNC's season. Testo made a lovely back pass through traffic to Kneipper, who fed Storey through several more defenders for an easy goal from five yards out at the 37:29 mark.
The Tar Heels added an insurance goal at 85:54 on an own goal. Gell took a shot from the left side of the goal that Gamecock defender Jordan Smith tried to clear, but Smith instead kicked it high into his own net for a 2-0 North Carolina lead.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Thursday in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, to be played in Cary, N.C. Carolina, seeded third, will face sixth-seeded Clemson at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
