VCU Shuts Out Tar Heels, 1-0

Richmond, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth defender Gonzalo Segares scored in the 24th minute, and the Rams made it hold up for a 1-0 win over 22nd-ranked North Carolina at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond on Saturday evening. With the win, VCU improves to 7-3 on the season, while defending national champion UNC fell to 8-5.
Segares' goal, his third of the season and first game-winner of the year, came from 25 yards out to the left of the penalty box. Segares' floated a ball to the top right corner of the net, beating Tar Heel goalkeeper Ford Williams.
The Rams made the lead stand up, as they posted their fifth team shutout of the season in 10 games. Sophomore goalkeeper Saul Montero recorded his third individual shutout.
Carolina's best scoring opportunity came in the 66th minute, as Mike Gell put a ball on net that got past Montero, but was cleared off the line by VCU's defense.
The Tar Heels return to action on Wednesday at UNC Wilmington.
