Carolina Field Hockey Opens With 4-0 Win Over UConn

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The University of North Carolina field hockey team opened the 2001 season Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 win against the University of Connecticut.
The game was played at Skidmore College in the hometown of Abby Martin, a UNC senior who started in the midfield. Martin scored the first Carolina goal off a penalty stroke at 26:02 of the first half.
Senior Abbey Woolley scored the second goal with an assist form freshman Charlotte Plugge with 8:03 left in the first half. At 27:35 of the second half freshman Keley Keeran scored the Tar Heels third goal with an assist from Plugge. Senior Susan Hayes scored the fourth goal with 11:10 left in the second half.
The matchup was UNC*s first meeting with Connecticut since 1997, when the Tar Heels won 4-0 in an NCAA Second Round game in Chapel Hill.
Carolina opens its home schedule next weekend with a pair of games at Francis E. Henry Stadium. On Saturday, Sept. 1, UNC hosts Penn State at 1 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 2, Virginia Commonwealth visits for another 1 p.m. game.
