CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina field hockey team kicked off its home schedule on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Penn State. On a rainy afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium, the Tar Heels were led by senior Abby Martin, who had two goals and an assist as her team improved to 2-0 on the season.
UNC, which opened the 2001 season last weekend with a 4-0 win over Connecticut, returns to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. home game against Virginia Commonwealth. Penn State (0-1) travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion.
"Penn State is a good team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They gave us all we could handle. I'm very proud of my team."
In this week's HockeyPoint national poll, UNC holds the top spot, while Penn State is ranked ninth.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead over the Nittany Lions when Martin scored on a penalty corner with 17:42 remaining in the first half. Senior Abbey Woolley and junior Meredith Keller were credited with assists.
Penn State quickly tied the game, however, when sophomore Neilye Stoner scored from the field a minute and a half later. The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
Less than five minutes into the second half, the Tar Heels drew a penalty corner, their fourth of the game. Senior Carrie Lingo tipped in Martin's shot to give UNC a 2-1 lead. With 10:41 to play, Carolina got its third goal, the first from the field, when Martin scored on an assist by Woolley.
For the game, UNC had six penalty corners, compared with one by Penn State. Carolina outshot the visitors 14-6. Lingo made a defensive save for UNC, while Stoner came up with one for the Nittany Lions.
"I'm very happy with today's effort," Shelton said. "We played well as a team and played good possession hockey. I like the variety of goals we had. We improved in every phase from last week's game."
