UNC Field Hockey Shuts Out Virginia, 3-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--In its final home game of the regular season, the University of North Carolina field hockey team defeated visiting Virginia 3-0 Thursday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. With the nonconference win, the No. 4 Tar Heels improved to 13-4 on the season. No. 8 Virginia fell to 11-6.
The victory was the 350th in the career of coach Karen Shelton, who is in her 21st season with the Tar Heels. Her overall record now stands at 350-87-9.
Carolina got the winning goal with 21:46 remaining in the first half when junior Stephanie Fuller deflected a pass from freshman Charlotte Plugge past Virginia goalkeeper Emily White. The goal was the first of the season for Fuller, who came off the bench to appear in her fifth game of the year after missing the first 12 with a leg injury suffered during the preseason.
Redshirt freshman Amber Chambers scored Carolina's second goal 9:38 before halftime when she flicked in a ball that had rebounded off a Virginia defender.
UNC's third goal came with 16:15 remaining in the game, when freshman Kerry Falgowski tipped in a pass from freshman Laura Douglas, who scored her first point as a Tar Heel.
The win was Carolina's sixth shutout of the season, the fifth at home. "Anytime you can shut someone out, it's a big accomplishment," said Falgowski, who is now the team's leader in goals with 12. "This was our last home game, and Coach talked to us before it about defending our home field."
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Norfolk, Va., where they'll face No. 2 Old Dominion Saturday at 1 p.m. and No. 11 William & Mary Sunday at noon.
On Nov. 1, 2 and 4, UNC will host the 20th annual ACC Field Hockey Championship at Henry Stadium. Game times are 4 p.m. on Thursday, 4 and 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Sunday for the title game.
