NORFOLK, VA -Behind four goals from junior Tiffany Snow, No. 2 Old Dominion defeated No. 4 North Carolina 6-4 in field hockey Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. Old Dominion improved to 14-4 with the win. North Carolina, which defeated ODU 2-1 in Chapel Hill on Oct. 17, is now 13-5.
Snow scored her first goal at the 25:50 mark of the first half on a penalty corner to give ODU the early lead. UNC's Amber Chambers, a redshirt freshman, tied the score seven minutes later with an unassisted goal following a scramble around the net. Chambers' goal was her sixth of the season, her second against Old Dominion.
With 11:05 to play before halftime, Snow used another penalty corner to give Old Dominion a 2-1 lead and put the Lady Monarchs ahead for good. ODU senior Julie Miracle scored a pair of goals from the field to put her team up 4-1 heading into the final seconds of the first half. Tar Heel senior Carrie Lingo scored on a penalty corner with no time remaining on the first-half clock to put the halftime score at 4-2
Snow scored twice-once on a penalty corner and once from the field-in the first 13 minutes of the second half to put ODU up by a four-goal margin. Carolina's Lingo put in her second goal of the game on a penalty corner with 15:42 to play and Tar Heel senior Abby Martin added a goal to her two assists on the day with a penalty stroke with 11:05 remaining, but UNC could pull no closer.
For the game, Old Dominion took 16 shots, 13 of them in the first half, while UNC took 10. The Lady Monarchs also had an advantage on penalty corners, 10-8. The six goals were the most Carolina has given up in a game since a 6-1 loss to Wake Forest in the 1999 ACC Tournament.
Both UNC and ODU will close out their regular seasons on Sunday with games at Foreman Field. Carolina will take on No. 11 William & Mary at noon and Old Dominion will host No. 19 Northeastern at 2 p.m.
