Bush's Monster Game Propels #4 Heels Past #11 Devils, 6-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore striker Susan Bush (Houston, Texas) produced a career best game to help lead the fourth-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team past 11th-ranked Duke 6-1 before a season-high crowd of 4,355 fans at Fetzer Field on Friday night.
ush figured in five of Carolina's six goals on the evening, scoring three times for the first hat trick of her career and adding a pair of assists. UNC senior forward Meredith Florance added her 14th and 15th goals of the season to move into 11th place all-time in goal scoring at the University.
The victory improved Carolina's record to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils lost their second straight match and fell to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The victory also gave UNC three points in the 2000-01 Carlyle Cup competition, a new all-sports rivalry between the two schools sponsored by the Greensboro-based jewelry company Carlyle and Company.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of the game. At 11:40, Florance scored on a 10-yard shot in the box, assisted by Bush and senior defender Kalli Kamholz. Kamholz started the play with a long throw in from the right side. Bush pushed the ball back to Florance, who gathered it in, pivoted and found the back of the net with a hard shot.
In the game's 24th minute, Tar Heel goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett was called for a hand ball just outside the box on the right side. Duke's Gwendolyn Oxenham created a quick restart and she centered the ball to reserve Brigid Bowdell whose shot hit the cross bar, bounced down and was finally cleared away by DePlatchett. Within seconds the Tar Heels launched a counter attack with freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey feeding Bush for a breakaway goal at 24:09.
The Blue Devils answered less than three minutes later when the Tar Heels attempted to clear the ball out after a corner kick. But Bowdell intercepted the clear and passed to Rebecca Smith, whose 20-yard blast found the lower right corner. The goal was the first that Carolina and DePlatchett had allowed in 402:32 dating back to a 2-1 loss at Clemson on September 13.
The Tar Heels would answer that goal before the half as Florance scored her second goal of the match, assisted by freshman midfielder Jordan Walker and Bush. Bush crossed the ball from the left wing to Walker, who centered to Florance, who had an easy putaway past Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallis.
The Tar Heels came out in the second half and put the game away in the first 11 minutes. Ramsey scored at 52:22 as she pushed a ball over the goal line assisted by freshman midfielder Maggie Tomecka and Kamholz. This score was very similar to the first goal as Kamholz launched a long throw in from the left side which Tomecka flicked on to Ramsey for the putaway. Just over three minutes later Bush scored on a solo effort, striking a ball from 30 yards away that found the upper right shelf beyond the lunge of Dallis. Bush also registered the last goal as she redirected a cross from junior midfielder Jena Kluegel into the left side of the goal at 67:02. Bush's header was also assisted by Ramsey, who triggered the play.
The other highlight of the evening for Tar Heel fans was the return to action of All-America midfielder Laurie Schwoy. The senior from Baltimore, Md. saw action for the first time in a game since December 6, 1998. Schwoy has been hampered since then by recurring hamstring problems. She entered the game at 72:47 to a standing ovation from Carolina fans anxious to see her return to the pitch. She played for over 12 minutes before going out at 85:01 to another round of applause.
The Tar Heels will be off for 12 days before they return to action against NC State on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m. at the WRAL Soccer Complex in Raleigh, N.C.
